I'm just wondering what the timeframe is of making something like this. I've seen speed paintings done somewhere in the realm of 45 to 60 minutes, but I've also known some people who can bang out what they call a "speed painting" in eight hours. Lookin really good, though. Those clean highlights really do bring the piece together quite elegantly.
basically the whole image from the sketch to the final took under the hour, but with this one I couldn't help coming back and tweaking colour and contrast, adding a touch more highlight etc. So It was actually finished in a 3 hour period in amogst doing other things.

c) the transition from the lines overlay to the clean highlights really baffles me : S - particularily with the gun and visor... how do you go from rough and sketchy to smooth, clean parts and peices
d) how do you get the crisp reflections and highlights, e.g. on the shoulder of the gun? do you select that block and paint it individually?
e) how many layers did you end up using for each step / in total
The blocking in brush is a normal airbrush tightened up to an elipse, I then angle it around 45 degrees
no I used a wacom intous 3 - a4 pad - a mouse would drive me mad
the lines overlay is just for checking im putting light and shade in the right places - I turn it off when Im done. The smoothness is a large softer airbrush used in the really dark areas and the really light areas - it generally helps blend in the rougher patches but still leaving a hint of texture behind.
For the gun highlights I paint within carefully selected areas - I often use paths for hard components, and it keeps good edge control
I think I used around ten layers in total - it gives me flexibily to go back and change things I dont like
